Another assistant, another place to lose context

Another desktop assistant needs to reduce the effort of resuming a task. If it merely adds somewhere else to search for the right conversation, I have acquired an organization problem with a nice icon. I want to open the tool and recognize what I was doing without investigating my own unfinished work.

Google's Gemini roundup published on April 24, 2026, brought together the Mac application and notebook and research features. That is the date of the monthly roundup, not a simultaneous launch date for everything. Revisiting it in October 2026, I care about what these surfaces do to the continuity of a task.

In July 2026, I asked for more parallel work and questioned the friction of switching Claude contexts. In June, I had already objected to passing every job's context to other agents. The situation I want to avoid is having a task to resume and spending my available attention deciding how much of the previous conversation to carry over.

A long conversation can hold the objective and current state. Finding both inside it is also work. I prefer a clear reference that lets me retrieve details relevant to the request. That helps with switching tasks without turning each return into a memory exercise for me and the agent.

Access to more files can make research easier. Another entry point can make starting easier too. I will assess those gains through the whole activity: how does the question become work, and how do I find the result afterward? Opening a window quickly solves the first movement. The part I need to resume still needs a recognizable home.

I also want decisions from different jobs kept from merging automatically. In a hypothetical example, a tool selected for a small project may be unsuitable for a larger analysis. The agent needs to understand why a reference applies. Organization should let me follow a task or project without requiring an enormous taxonomy before I can ask for anything.

My decision is to require a concrete reason for each application to join the workflow. In the next comparison, I will start an activity, leave it, and examine what I must reconstruct on return. A saving counts only if it survives that passage. A desktop full of assistants interests me when I can use them without becoming responsible for moving context manually between every window.

Retrospective written in October 2026. The post date identifies the week revisited; the opinions draw on later experience.
